On the day after Christmas in 1688, Scottish privateer Captain William Kidd was in a tavern in Antigua with fellow-privateer Captain Hewitson, and Governor Christopher Codrington.
Codrington had hired both captains to lead a small fleet, and had given them permission to attack the French island of Marie Gallante.
They then settled their new arrangement with a toast. According to an eye witness, the three men drank “Rum, Water, Lime-Juice, Egg yolk, Sugar with a little nutmeg scrap’d on top.” Essentially, Captain Kidd’s Punch was a simple, frothy rum punch.
