In the post-emancipation period, People of Indian Origin would form the largest population of labourers in the sugarcane industry . The majority of them would come from north and central India.
Many would be refugees fleeing the turmoil created from the interference of the East India Company in the economic affairs on the subcontinent.
Prior to this, the Plantocracy also introduced both Chinese and Portuguese immigrants as labour on the estates.
